Atlantic City Police Department
The Atlantic City Police Department is a municipal law enforcement agency that serves Atlantic City, New Jersey. The department is currently headed by Chief of Police Henry White who succeeded previous chief Ernest Jubilee.〔http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/breaking/atlantic-city-s-new-police-chief-henry-white-vows-reforms/article_76063374-666d-11e3-9f19-001a4bcf887a.html〕 Both "black" Chiefs succeeded "caucasian" Chief John Mooney III, who was systematically forced to resign as chief of the police department. This was ultimately accomplished by creating an environment in which Mooney would not be able to function within as the leader of the department, first a black female who had held the rank of lieutenant, a lower middle management position within the Jersey City Police Department was chosen to take control of the Atlantic City Police Department and become Mooney's boss as public safety director, next Mooney was slated for demotion to Deputy Chief of police, when his new boss was questioned as to who would be chosen from among the three Deputy Chiefs, Mooney, Jubilee or White to run the"day to day operations" of the police department, she replied, "Not Mooney". The so called "Mooney Curse" continued even after his departure from the police department, as testing was conducted for the Chiefs position whereas White and Jubilee scored 2nd and 3rd respectively and "caucasian" Deputy Chief Joseph "BoBo" Nolan a lifelong city resident scored 1st, but was passed over two separate times for the Chiefs position. Mooney would go on to file a discrimination lawsuit against the city and ultimately be awarded $2.9 million dollars.〔http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/communities/atlantic-city_pleasantville_brigantine/judge-denies-atlantic-city-police-chief-mooney-s-bid-to/article_6a4c4758-6770-11df-8156-001cc4c002e0.html.〕
The department includes a Patrol Unit, Traffic Unit (made up of a Motorcycle Unit and an Accident Investigation Unit) and a K-9 Unit. Other divisions are Investigations, Vice, Support and Internal Affairs.〔Atlantic City Police web site accessed 3 October 2013〕
